Swedish football failed to build on its great achievement of reaching the 1958 World Cup Final and the following decade was one of frustation as the national team failed to qualify for any major international tournament.
The 1970's saw a return to from thanks to a new gereration of players, a number of whom were playing, like their 50s predecessors, in Europe's strongest Leagues. The 50s generation had made their names in Serie A while the 70s stars were doing the same in the Bundesliga and Dutch Eredivisie.
Sweden qualified for successive World Cup tournaments in 1970, 1974 and 1978 and performed with distinction at all of them thanks to key invididuals like goalkeeper Ronny Hellström, midfield all-rounders Conny Torstensson and Benno Magnusson and free-scoring forwards Roland Sandberg and Ralf Edström.
