The excitement of the mid 1970s at Craven Cottage with Best, Marsh and a FA Cup Final appearance gave way to more difficult times for Fulham at the decade progressed.
Bobby Campbell's period in charge ended with relegation to the third tier in 1980 and he was replaced as manager by Malcolm McDonald. The former international centre forward stabilised the club and set it on an upwards trajectory with a promising new team featuring Ray Houghton, Paul Parker, Tony Gale and the prolific striker Gordon Davies.
