Stoke City hopes at the start of the 1993-94 season of mounting a challenge to return to the top flight for the first time in nearly a decade were dealt a blow when popular manager Lou Macari and star striker Mark Stein both left the Club early in the season.
That was not before new summar signings including midfielder Toddy Örlysson, strike ace Simon Sturridge and cult hero Kevin 'Rooster' Rusell had arrived.
It was also not before the aforementioned Stein had lit up the Victoria Ground with his brace of goals in the home leg of the Coca Cola Cup tie against a shell-shocked Manchester Unitied-what a night!
Dave Regis in particular did his best to replace Stein's goals, but ultimately Stoke finished in 10th place and four points adrift of the play-off places.
