The appointment of the Frenchman Bruno Metsu as coach in 2000 was the catalyst for a transformation in the fortunes of the Senegal national team. The first tournament he took charge for was that year's African Nations Cup and a reasonable showing was ended by the co-hosts Nigeria in the Quarter-Finals.
What a number of previously out of favour players brought back into the fold and an exciting new generation of players coming to the fore, qualification for the 2002 World Cup was earned with ease. El Hadji Diouf was the attacking star with 9 goals, but the Lions of Teranga side were also strengthened by the contributions of players like Henri Camara, Tony Sylva, Lamine Diatta, Moussa N'Diaye and Papa Bouba Diop.
