Having finished the previous year as runners-up to Uruguay in the Copa America, 1984 proved a quiet year for Brazil featuring just a handful of friendly matches in June of that year. These games were used to give opportunities to up and coming and fringe players including Ricardo Gomes, Carlos Mozer, Roberto Dinamite, Renato Gaucho, Zenon and Wladimir.
Results were mixed: a surprise 2-0 Rio defeat to a touring England side was followed up with a scoreless draw with Argentina and a single goal by Arturzinho brought victory over Uruguay and some revenge for their previous meeting.
