Champions both the year before and the year after, the 1984-85 season saw Panathinaikos miss out on the Greek title as they finished 3 points behind PAOK. Much attention was focused on the club's European run which took them all the way to the semi-finals of the European Cup.
This season was also notable for the arrival from Panionios of a future club legend in Dimitris Saravakos. The talented, creative attacker had a great debut season and finished as the league's second top-scorer with 15 goals. He formed a great understanding in deeper positions with Juan Ramon Rocha and another newcomer in Velimir Zajec, then pushed forward to combine brilliantly with strikers Charalampidis and Dimopoulos.
