In 1980 Miljan Miljanic was in charge of Yugoslavia for the third of his four spells with the national side. He had at his disposal a highly talented team built around Dragan Pantelic in goal, Boro Primorac in defence, Vladimir Petrovic alongside the prolific goal-scoring Safet Susic in midfield and Zlatko Vujovic up front.
This year brought friendly wins over Uruguay, Romania and Poland and the start of the 1982 World Cup qualifying campaign. A 2-0 loss in December to Italy looked damaging, but Yugoslavia would bounce back and ultimately qualify top of their group.
