While Canadian football would peak in the 1980s with a World Cup qualification and the nation's sole success to date in its regional Concacaf Championship, the roots of that success started to grow a decade earlier.
Partipation in the 1976 Olympic tournament came as a by-product of Montreal hosting the event, but qualification for the Concacaf Championship a year later was earned on the pitch from a campaign that included a 3-0 win over the USA.
At the tournament itself Canada managed a respectable fourth placed showing thanks to the smart leadership of West German coach Eckhard Krautzun and the goals of centre forward Buzz Parsons.
