The Yugoslav coach Tomislav Ivic had shaped the fortunes of the Iran national team in the run up to the 1998 World Cup, but the domestic-based Jalal Talebi took over in time for the tournament proper.
This was one of Irans strongest-ever sides featuring a number of Bundesliga-based players like midfielder Karim Bagheri and forwards Khodadad Azizi and Ali Daei. Drawn in a difficult group they lost to Germany and FR Yugoslavia, but ensured the party returned to Tehran happy after defeating the USA 2-1 in their group game thanks to goals from Estili and Mahdavikia.
