Over the course of the 1980s the Cameroonian national team slowly built a momentum that would reach its climax during a remarkable World Cup qualification had arrived in1982 and the Indomitable Lions performed above expectations by drawing all three group games and being unlucky not the progress to the knock-out rounds.
Two years later Cameroon overcame Nigeria to become champions of Africa for the first time and as the decade neared its end a powerful team was coming together under the experienced leadership of the Russian, Valery Nepomnyashchy.
