With Olympic football totally dominated by the Eastern Bloc states and their professional amateurs, any hope that this French squad could advance far in the 1968 Olympic football competition was slight.
Despite a loss against Colombia, France still topped their group table thanks to earlier wins over Guinea and Mexico and advanced to a Quarter Final tie against little-fancied Japan. Hopes of a medal started to appear more realistic untill the Japanese pulled the surprise of the tournament and recorded the best result in their footballing history with a deserved 3-1. The dissappointed France side featured three players who would go on to repsresent the full national team, most notably Saint Etienne midfielder Jean-Michel larqué.
