A slow start to Samp's 1979-80 Serie B cost coach Lamberto Giorgis his job after just seven rounds of the championship.  He was replaced by Lauro Toneatto who steadied the club's fortunes and took a team that featured reliable keeper Claudio Garella, attacking midfielder Maurizio Orlando and 9 goal forward Giovanni Sartori back towards the promotion places.

Alas Toneatto's side could reach no higher than seventh position which left them four points outside the promotion places.
