1987 remains a seminal year in the long and storied history of CA Peñarol as it represents the most recent time that the club has been champions of South America.

The Libertadores success was a thrilling one, exspecially the Final encounter against América de Cali. A goal  3 minutes from time in the second-leg by Jorge Villar levelled the aggregate and took the game to a play-off. After 120 goalless minutes in that play-off, penalties loomed untill Diego Aguirre netted the latest of winners for the Montevideo gaints.
