Portugal qualified for the 1984 European Championships from a tough group that featured both Poland and the Soviet Union, so hopes of a strong showing at the tournament proper in France were high.
The first group stage was a tight affair full of closely fought games, but a lateNené goal was good enough to give Portugal a vtial win over Romania and progress to the semi-finals. A trilling match against the hosts France ensued with Fernando Chalana brilliant on the wing and two-goal centre forward Rui Jordão ruthless in front of goal.
The game went to extra-time and Portugal's hopes were cruelly ended by Michel Platini's 119th minute winner.
