The 1985-86 season saw Ipswich Town surrender their topflight status and return to the second tier for the first time since 1968. Bobby Ferguson's team battled hard all season against thr drop, but a final day defeat at Sheffield Wednesday was costly as Leicester City - starting the day behind them in the final relagation place - won the leapfrog them in the table and stay up.
This was an Ipswich team that had lost plenty of experience in the close season with the departure of long-serving players like George Burley, Eric Gates and Rusell Osman. The recent arrival Kevin Wilson proved an astute signing however and he finished the season as Town's top scorer with 15 goals.
