As the 1970s got underway FC Porto was a club ready to burst out of the shadows of the Lisbon giants. The breakthrough hadn't quite happened the previous decade with the club finishing as Primeira League runners-up on no fewer than six occasions, but the new decade had started with a missstep with Porto recording a lowly 9th placed finish in 1970 - the worst in their history.
They bounced back to run Benfica close the following season, but under new coach Paulo Amaral the 1971-72 season didn't bring back that hoped for step forward: Porto finished back in 5th position, 22 points adrift of champions Benfica and their wait to win another championship would last at least another 12 months.
Notable FC Porto players of the era included young midfielder Rodolfo Reis, forward Lemos and the ex-Benfica striker Abel Miglietti and the club was starting to forge a solid reputation for developing great young talent, a policy that would bring much success in the years to come.
