The mid 90s was a tricky period for Watford as the club sought to recover its place in the top flight it had so enjoyed the previous decade. League campaigns under managers Steve Perryman and Glenn Roeder typically brought under lower half finishers in the second tier as the club tried to cope with losing influential players like David James, Paul Furlong and Bruce Dyer to Premier League clubs.
The 1994-95 season was a more optimistic one with the goals of new signings Craig Ramage, Tommy Mooney and Kevin Philips helping the club to a finish just outside the play-off places, despite being early season favourites for relegation.
