The 1983-84 Division 2 season was marked by Montpellier's commitment to securing a promotion, offering a captivating and hopeful spectacle for the supporters. Now led by former player Robert Nouzaret, La Paillade managed to achieve a respectable fifth place in group A, behind major teams such as Lyon, Marseille, and Nice.
The season saw the birth of a dynamic and promising team. Both in the midfield with the experience of Bernard Ducuing and Jean-Louis Gasset, and in attack with Jean-Marc Valadier, the club's overallsecond highest scorer, led the attack effectively. More exciting still was the emergence of some brilliant youngsters in Laurent Blanc, Pascal Baills and Franck Passi who would all go on to have highly distinguished careers.
